Frequently asked questions
What size septic tank do I need?
The right septic tank will depend on factors including the number of people using the system, the property, site conditions and local approval requirements. Ri-Industries manufactures septic tanks in a range of sizes from 1,620 to 20,000 litres. Speak to your plumber or the Ri-Industries sales team about the right option for your property.
Why choose a concrete septic tank instead of a plastic septic tank?
Concrete septic tanks are strong, durable and stable underground. Their weight helps reduce the risk of the tank shifting or floating in changing ground or groundwater conditions, while reinforced concrete is designed to withstand the pressures associated with underground installation.
Ri-Industries concrete septic tanks are manufactured from 40 MPa concrete and are installed on a prepared base before being backfilled with approved granular material, such as sand, compacted in 150mm layers in accordance with the installation requirements.
Concrete tanks are heavier and require suitable access and professional installation, but once correctly installed they provide a strong, stable long-term solution.

Are concrete septic tanks safer than plastic tanks?
The weight and strength of a concrete tank can provide advantages once it is installed underground. Ri-Industries septic tanks also have child-proof and vandal-proof concrete lids for additional safety and peace of mind.
The appropriate tank and installation will depend on the site, and all septic systems must meet applicable SA Health and local council requirements.
Can a septic tank be installed under a driveway or trafficable area?
It depends on the tank. Ri-Industries’ horizontal septic tanks should not be installed in trafficable areas. If a trafficable septic tank is required, speak to Ri-Industries about the appropriate vertical tank and cover option.
When can't you install a septic tank?
Not every site or tank configuration will be suitable for a standard septic tank installation. Factors such as site conditions, available space, required burial depth, vehicle traffic and local wastewater requirements can affect what can be installed.
Septic system installation and design are regulated by SA Health and require local approval. Speak to your plumber, local council or Ri-Industries before ordering if you are unsure whether a septic tank is suitable for your site.
How soon can I get a septic tank?
Ri-Industries manufactures septic tanks at its South Australian facility in a range of commonly required sizes and configurations. Availability will depend on the tank required and current production and delivery schedules, so contact the Ri-Industries sales team to discuss what you need and when you need it.
How much does a septic tank cost?
The cost will depend on the size and type of septic tank you require, as well as installation and site requirements. Contact the Ri-Industries sales team for current tank pricing, or speak to your plumber if they are supplying and installing the complete septic system.
How often does a septic tank need to be emptied?
For an average family of four to six people, a septic tank may need to be desludged approximately every four years, or as required by your local council. The actual frequency will depend on how the system is used.
How long does a concrete septic tank last?
The lifespan of a concrete septic tank will depend on its manufacture, installation, ground conditions, use and maintenance. Ri-Industries has been manufacturing concrete septic tanks since 1947, using engineer-designed construction and 40 MPa concrete for strength and durability.
